I'm looking forward to another partner viewpoint.
I'd love to hear his viewpoints on what makes a excellent junior associate.
OK, but why do you folks always assume the partners are men?
8:22 here, I guess I assume partners are men, because they generally are men. Percentage-wise I've read it's usually only 15-20% female partners. My usage of "his" wasn't a commentary on the capabilities of female lawyers in the least (I'm a male and not ashamed to admit many of my fellow classmates who are females are much smarter than me), but rather a reflection of solid statistics and a dislike of using his/her.
The lengths to which PC has infiltrated our culture, as evidenced by the above dialogue, makes me want to puke.
I just discovered this blog and I want to say that I'm really enjoying the useful and informative posts that I'm finding here.I've skimmed the archives and come across many helpful tips, and hope to learn more in future posts. I do have one issue that perhaps you can address in the future; given the state of the legal market (or the state of our law school success or lack thereof) many of us are looking at small to mid-size firms for entry level associate opportunities. My question is, what are the best ways to find out which smaller firms in your area or looking to recruit someone? As I'm sure you know, only some of these smaller firms have (usually at best a generic) recruiting/hiring link on their website, leaving you to sort out who you should even send an unsolicited resume to. Sometimes they might post a position on a job board somewhere, though frequently not, and through what contacts I have I've heard of several small firms that were hiring that never posted any sort of job ad online. How do you find out who's really hiring these days? Thanks, and looking forward to more great information.
What are your thoughts on joint degrees, specifically JD/MPP degrees? How are those viewed by law firms? Would it be a neutral, negative, or positive factor?
I am a current law school applicant interested in a government/public policy career, but would find it very helpful to get a read on the extent going down that path is closing doors.
(e.g. If a student was applying for summer associate positions, could it hurt him/her because firms would assume the student was less fully committed to working for BigLaw?)
I'd like to see a post about appropriate style/dress. Will those $80 Brooks Brothers shirts exude a more professional demeanor than a $30 button down that is clean, ironed and in good shape? I guess I'm wondering whether spending more money on clothes can further one's career (of course I mean spending extra money on clothes that are classy and timeless, not trendy or gawdy).
